Surprise, Wip3out Coming To PS3
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Action, PlayStation 3,
Perhaps to no one’s surprise, Sony confirmed that there is a next-generation WipEout in the works for the Playstation 3. Sony needs more exclusive titles, and leveraging past successes may help them deliver. In an interview with Developer Magazine, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe management confirmed the existence of the title when discussing downloadable content. WipEout Pure used this to great effect on the PSP; hopefully the additional content for the Playstation 3 will be plentiful and free.

Call Of Duty 3 Map Pack Broken
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Activision, First Person Shooters, Xbox 360, Xbox Live, Xbox Live Marketplace,
Gaming blog 2old2play is reporting that the Valor Map Pack, the 800 point content add-on for Call of Duty 3 shipped in a non-functional state. Referring to multiple complaints on the Xbox forums, it appears that a small percentage of people have gotten the content working by deleting previously downloaded content, but a majority can not get the maps to work. A post by a Treyarch employee indicates that they are working on the problem, but this appears to be an ongoing quality assurance issue for Xbox Live content. Xbox Live Arcade games and downloadable add-on content for other games have shipped in partially functioning states, and retail games have also seen issues. It appears that Microsoft’s certification testing team can find some issues; anticipated releases like the Crackdown demo have been delayed because of problems found during certification. Balancing the release process against the risks of not finding issues can be difficult, but it seems like major issues are going unnoticed.

Rare Not Convinced On Downloadable Content
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Xbox 360, Xbox Live Marketplace,
GamesIndustry.biz recently interviewed Viva Piñata developer Rare, and in some published excerpts, the company claims that it is still on the fence in regards to downloadable content. Viva Piñata’s collection-based gameplay would seem to make the game ideal for future downloads, but Rare is balancing developing add-ons versus creation of a whole new game. Part of Rare’s hesitance seems to be tied to the relative lack of success that they have had with previous downloadable releases. Realistically, though, the additional content that Rare has offered has been pretty marginal. The company’s Kameo Power Pack really only offered new game modes, and nothing particularly compelling. Other game companies have been trumpeting the virtues of downloadable content; Activision and Ubisoft have been happy with the success of their expansions for Call of Duty and Ghost Recon, and Electronic Arts has been going crazy for paid content, so it is odd to see a company with such close ties to Microsoft not buying into the business model.

Microsoft’s HD Space Solution: Buy Another Hard Drive
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Hardware, Xbox 360, Xbox Live Marketplace,
With Microsoft’s announcement of downloadable high definition movies and television, some concerns were raised over the relatively small size of the 20 GB hard drive available. After formatting the drive and including Microsoft’s default installation, the drive winds up with around 13 GB free. Many have suggested that this announcement indicates a larger hard drive in the Xbox 360’s future. Indeed, this is one of the rumors that won’t seem to die. However, when GamersReports talked to Aaron Greenberg, the Xbox Group Product Marketing manager, he offered a different solution: transfer your Xbox Live Account to a memory unit, and buy another hard drive. Most gamers with the Premium Xbox 360 probably haven’t bought a memory card, so getting the ability to store more downloadable content ends up costing the gamer upwards of $100.
