Summer of Arcade 2009 brings Turtles in Time, Marvel vs Capcom 2, more

The second annual Summer of Arcade kicks off on July 22nd, bringing with it one of the most hotly anticipated games to hit the Xbox Live Arcade: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled for 1200 Microsoft Points. Over the course of the following four weeks, the excitement continues. Here’s a look at the schedule for the 2009 Summer of Arcade:

This has to be the ultimate gift for anyone who couldn’t get over their first game system. The GEN-X plays both old Nintendo and Sega Genesis games, including Japanese imports, in stereo (depending on the game.) Included controllers work with either system after you have connected it to your TV. At a size of 17 x 15 x 4cm, the GEN-X Game System will set you back $39.99. Skyscraper Space Invader Worries Security Experts

We know that security experts are fairly nervous of late and this video of Skyscraper Space Invaders seemed to really freak out McAffee. “Perhaps the first demo was just for fun, but the others will have less juvenile goals,” said McAfee Avert Labs researcher Francois Paget.
Yves Peitzner, director of Brainstormclub, the German company that produced the video, said that this was a promotional idea for a video game conference. They produced it even when the planners backed out. Two buildings in Munich were used and the game was added in post production.

Developer Komodo has teamed with distributors Innex and created a Retro Adapter that lets you connect your NES, SNES or N64 controller (including the Analog Stick) with your Wii console. Plug into an open GameCube port and it will work with both 1st and 3rd party accessories. The Komodo adapter should be making its official debut at the E3 2009 and be available in mid-June for about $20.00.

Never got over Sonic the Hedgehog? Blaze has announced that it is releasing a new version of Sega’s classic console. The Mega Drive is plug and play, has 15 games built-in, but should also play all old cartridges. Titles include Alien Storm, Crack Down, Fatal Labyrinth, Golden Axe and Sonic And Knuckles. You can pre-order the Mega Drive for only £37.99 (~$53.00) with free shipping and expect a delivery date of April 24.

If you find yourself still playing Classic video games, take a trip in time at Arcade Cow. They feature over 7000 free games that they have collected. Included are various action, arcade, strategy and puzzle games. They are all free to play and gamers can post on the forum and rate them. Those who remember the addictive play of Mario Bros. and Castlevania should be pleased and although they appear elementary now, younger players may appreciate the roots of today’s gaming.

Atari Attempts Comeback

Atari’s new president Phil Harrison has plans to have its name associated with more than simply retro gaming. Their “Jenga World Tour” and “Godzilla Unleashed” didn’t receive the best of reviews so they plan to move into MMO games, such as “The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf” that will be released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 late next year. Other plans include “EVE Online,” “Ready 2 Rumble Revolution” on Wii and “Ghostbusters: The Videogame.” Be that as it may, we still remember when “Asteroids” was hot enough for us and were grateful for the Atari name.

Every time you feed the Arcade Gaming Bank a penny, it will let you play either Tetris or Breakout. You can get a lot of practice in for a dollar if you can get used to the smaller screen. Space Invaders baseball caps

Last year we featured lots of Space Invaders stuff, such as the bling, welcome mat, tote bag and even a baby mobile. Well we just found out the classic video game turns 30 this year. To celebrate, manufacturer Taito and New Era caps have teamed up to release a collection of seven black, fitted-style 59Fifty caps embroidered with the game’s characters. We think they’re a tad pricey at $57 each, but think of how great it will go with this scarf. According to StrictlyFitteds.com, the caps are available at Cap Collector One and New Era.
