Xbox 360 Not Likely To See Divx Support

Xbox 360In Major Nelson’s recent “blogcast”, he states that Microsoft will “probably not” ever support DivX (through Windows Media Center) on Xbox 360. He’s vocal about the fact that it was likely due to people using the popular codec to violate copyright and “backup” DVDs.  So apparently all of us who use DivX to encode our home movies to save on storage space are out of luck? Larry…there are a lot of legitimate uses for DivX. Sure, people are using it to violate copyright, but don’t paint everyone with the same brush. DivX is a fantastic codec for people who create their own content and want it to take up the least amount of space possible, while maintaining good video quality.

I get why they are doing it but its not cool.  DivX and XviD both have legitimate uses and it sucks we can’t use them :(

Its like Apple saying the iPod can’t use MP3s because they are used illegally…

This is true, I posted a link on my site to a free converter that will convert any divx to a mpeg format that wmc can read.

I am currently researching a way to upgrade to divx codecs on wmc. Ill keep you posted. gO CHECK out my site though, that lil program is kick ass~

This is false reasoning and ridiculous.

It is purely an anti-competitive measure where microsoft is limiting the functionality its customers want to prevent a better technology from progressing. I’m not saying that they should have to support divx, that is their decision, but such a blatant lie shows a lack of respect to consumers.

Does it support mp3 playback?
