Using Unlicensed Cables, Controllers Voids Your PS3 Warranty (!!)

Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories:

HDMI Cable Sony Only!PS3 owners dealing with broken units have had some problems getting their consoles fixed. The reason? Well, it’s all plain as day for everyone to see in the PS3 Warranty Text:

(2) THE PRODUCT IS USED WITH PRODUCTS NOT SOLD OR LICENSED BY SCEA (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, NON-LICENSED GAME ENHANCEMENT DEVICES, CONTROLLERS, ADAPTORS AND POWER SUPPLY DEVICES). YOU ASSUME ALL RISKS AND LIABILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH USE OF THIRD PARTY PRODUCTS.

In other words: if you didn’t use a PS3-branded or Sony-licensed HDMI cable when connecting up your PS3, you’ve just voided your warranty. This problem was first found be a user over in the AVS Forums who called Sony with a broken PS3. When he told them that he hooked up his console with generic component cables, they told him that his formerly-under-warranty repair would cost him $150. (Fortunately, Target was nicer to him and accepted it as a 90-day return). If you’ve connected your PS3 to your TV with something other than a Sony-branded or licensed cable, and you want to get anywhere with Sony customer service, we can only offer one piece of advice: LIE.

I can understand Sony not offering to repair consoles that are damaged by mod chips or hacks. But “controllers, adaptors, and power supply devices”? That just sounds like Sony is looking for any way it can to wriggle out of liability. Guess it’s time to start looking for the Sony seal of approval on every controller and cable you buy for the console…

I think this may be a violation of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson-Moss_Warranty_Act

Car dealers tried this junk on consumers years ago, and—the way I understand it, but I could be wrong—the company would have to show that ‘after-market parts’ are what caused the defect.
If you get a “no” from Sony, keep trying. They would have to show the cables you are using caused the defect.

This isn’t about HDMI cables…

What occurred here is that this guy used 3rd party component cables hooked to Sony’s Proprietary Multi AV connector…then he screwed up the Multi AV!

Why would Sony fix something when somebody hooked up something to a proprietary port?

You CAN use any HDMI you want without voiding the warranty because Sony used industry standard HDMI ports (and usb and hdd etc)...thus they HAVE to accept standard third party products.

He got component cables with his system too…so where are those?

In addition…read the XBOX and WII warranties…they same the exact (very close) thing.

This actually appears to be a standard clause in all console warranties. See Microsoft’s here.

This Limited Warranty shall not apply and Microsoft has no liability under this Limited Warranty if the Xbox Product:

is used with products not sold or licensed by Microsoft (including, but not limited to, non-licensed games and game enhancement devices, adaptors and power supply sources) or which are otherwise incompatible;

And Nintendo’s here.

THIS WARRANTY SHALL NOT APPLY IF THIS PRODUCT: (a) IS USED WITH PRODUCTS NOT SOLD OR LICENSED BY NINTENDO (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, NON-LICENSED GAME ENHANCEMENT AND COPIER DEVICES, ADAPTERS, AND POWER SUPPLIES);

In fact, XBox warrany is even worse - not only it includes that, but also Microsoft wont repair your xbox, if you used unlicensed game in it!

and of course, it has nothing to do with HDMI and Sony doesnt even have its own HDMI cables…

Holy cow - what a complete fabrication of an article.
It says NOTHING about cables in the that statement - get a brain people. A cable is NOT an adaptor - look it up in the electronics description in the warranty.

That’s a standard warranty that is included with all consoles and most digital devices.

If you read it AND use your brain at the same time what it says is:
“If your machine is damaged by a 3rd party product, it’s not our fault because it’s not been licensed by us so we have no guaruntee of the quality. If it’s damaged by a Sony product…speak to us, we’ll look into it!!!”

I’m sure it makes sense to most people?

There’s nothing new about this. My PSone died during the warranty period and Sony blamed it on a Nyko memory card… refused to fix it. My PS2 laser burnt up and they blamed it on my MadCatz controler. I refuse to purchase a PS3 for this reason… and several other reasons are related to Sony being all-around d!ks.
