Karraker: Real Gamers Want The PS3

Share

Posted by Chris Pereira Categories: Corporate News, PlayStation 3

Dave KarrakerWhile Dave Karraker may have a difficult job in trying to spin the moronic statements made by seemingly every Sony exec related to the PlayStation, sometimes he just makes things worse. You know, when he goes out on his own and says things like this:

That’s kind of a tough question to answer. I am pretty sure if you asked just about any real gamer out there if they would like to have a PS3, their answer would be a resounding “Yes!” I think a lot of this goes back to the proliferation of the Internet, where a very vocal minority can make a lot of noise and potentially alter perceptions of the masses, whether they are accurate or not. A lot of this, naturally, is driven by the media who seem focused on taking swipes at us lately, without taking in the full picture.

Vocal minority? Maybe so, but apparently Mr. Karraker hasn’t taken a look at the NPD numbers for last month – the ones where the sold an absolutely abysmal 82,000 units. (By comparison, the Xbox 360 sold 174,000 units and the Wii 360,000.) When is Sony going to collectively stop bragging? The reason the media takes so many swipes at Sony is because they seem too caught up in trying to convince everyone that the PS3 is the greatest thing around… without actually backing it up with anything of substance. My advice: shut up and let your games do the talking.

Dave Karraker is absolutely right.  Real Gamers Want The PS3.  Wannabe gamers want an unstable 360 or a baby rattler.  I mean the Wii.  And it’s not about the numbers of consoles sold now.  It’s about which console will be in the lead next year.  Chris you will be eating your words by the end of the year.

I’m not knocking the PS3. I think it’s going to be great. But the constant spew coming from Sony execs is ridiculous to the extreme.

I don’t understand why everyone thinks the PS3 is selling so terribly. It has outsold the Xbox 360 over the same time-frame when it was launched in 2005. I think that’s pretty good for a console that’s much more expensive. That and the fact the PS2 is still the best-selling console available. Sony’s making almost pure profit on that system by now.
even ubisoft said that the ps3 is the most powerful console in the market.your just some xbox fanboy.
i got a 360 ,but i think my ps3 is better is graphics

and ps3 is using 20-25% of its power on the games that just came out, xbox 360 is alredy using 80-85%....so yea, just whait till PS3 pushes the pedal to the metal.and u xbox fanboys know that the ps3 is better, but you just don’t wana get it…..
do ya? hard headed people

Chris you are simply doing _exactly_ what Karraker stated: “vocal minority can make a lot of noise and potentially alter perceptions of the masses, whether they are accurate or not”

There is no truth in the fact a single months sales represents a failure for the PS3. None at all. You are the one to blame for the Sony people having to explain stupid things that YOU come up with. If you ask stupid questions EXPECT stupid answers.

Additionally Sony is not concerned by the sluggish early performance of the PS3 - the have stated (since before the launch) that the PS3 was to have a product lifecycle of 10 years or more. You think a couple of months of data as a way to determine longevity? Seriously you are nothing more than a classic anti-Sony mongerer.. no valid truths.. just hype.. hype and more hype.

Im with Karraker on this one.. you lot make it hard for anyone to see any real sort of truth. Seems MS’s 2 billion dollar viral campaign is working sufficiently well…

“I don’t understand why everyone thinks the PS3 is selling so terribly. It has outsold the Xbox 360 over the same time-frame when it was launched in 2005.”
Because the 360 was supply constrained until April of ‘06. You couldn’t buy one if you wanted to. PS3 was readily available by January of ‘07. I could have bought one for list price in December ‘06. The 360 has a very large lead, and is outselling PS3 2 to 1 presently, which forces developers to go where the money is. The Wii just makes it worse for the PS3.

“Additionally Sony is not concerned by the sluggish early performance of the PS3 - the have stated (since before the launch) that the PS3 was to have a product lifecycle of 10 years or more.”

Sony SHOULD be concerned. If they are not then they are foolish, and not very good business people. KK said that demand would be there, despite the high price. People would have to work harder, take two jobs. Well that is not happening. You can read the data or choose to ignore it.

To get to 10 years they must first make it to 5 years. If developers choose 360 over PS3, then the PS3 will be an also-ran this generation.

“Im with Karraker on this one.. you lot make it hard for anyone to see any real sort of truth. Seems MS’s 2 billion dollar viral campaign is working sufficiently well…”

Ever hear of project “hydra”? That is the name of Sony’s viral campaign.

I didn’t imply in the story that the PS3 was going to fail, but when you make assertions that essentially every gamer wants a PS3, it’s just not true. The reason I brought up sales numbers was not to say the PS3 is already dead in the water (on the contrary, I’m one of the people that argues it’s going to be a fantastic system in a year or two). It was to show that if, right now, _everyone_ wants a PS3, why don’t the sales numbers reflect that? I think a whole of people _will_ want the PS3 down the road, but Karraker’s using phrases like “real gamers” isn’t very conclusive evidence.

From BusinessWeek yesterday…

“Despite growing anticipation that a $100 price cut for the PS3 is imminent this summer or early fall, we do not believe such a move would meaningfully improve stagnant PS3 sales and we are growing more concerned that a share shift away from Sony and Microsoft to Nintendo’s Wii platform is incrementally negative of all 3rd-party publishers,” Savner said.

He continued, “Based on our analysis, we conclude that a $100 price cut for the PS3 (we have dismissed a potential $50 cut as meaningless) would still leave the ‘all-in’ cost for a PS3 console and basic accoutrements 20-25% higher than the comparable Xbox 360, and does not even reflect the possibility that Microsoft could also lower its hardware prices. Further, an important driver of Sony hardware last cycle was exclusive games, such as Grand Theft Auto. Unfortunately, Sony does not have a similar advantage this cycle. Halo 3, a highly anticipated game release this year is a Microsoft-published game only for the Xbox, and Grand Theft Auto IV, by Take-Two’s Rockstar unit, is being released on both the Sony and Xbox platforms.”

I don’t think you’re going to see a price drop per se; instead, the 60GB SKU is going to be dropped down to the $499.99 price tag, and a new SKU—one with a larger hard drive—will take its place at $599.99.

CHRIS PEREIRA YOU ARE A FAN BOY FANATIC DUMB ####. “CHRIS PEREIRA YOU ARE A FAN BOY FANATIC DUMB ####.”

What is with the CAPS and antagonistic attitude? Sounds like a fanboy to me…

“AND IM NO PS3 FAN BUT SHEESH I MEAN…”

Yep…Fanboy.

“SO THAT WONT GET YOU MAD RIGHT…THATS NOT ARROGANCY”

Arrogancy is not even close to being a word.

“WHY DONT YOU LOOK AT THE NUMBERS FOR WINDOWS VISTA THAT FAILED TO STIR UP THE MARKET HUH HUH HUH” Besides the fact that Vista has nothing to do with Sony PS3, the “huh huh huh” speaks volumes about your debating ability…

“AND STOP BEING BIASED YOU DUMB EXCUSE FOR A JOURNALIST….YOUR SUPPOSED TO BE IMPARTIAL YOU DUMB ####”

Way to go. If he was biased before, he will no longer be, because of what you just said.

“...STOP MAKING THE REST OF US “READERS” ASHAMED THAT THERE IS PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD THAT DOESNT KNOW HOW TO WRITTE COLUMS THAT US “READERS OR GAMERS” ARE FORCED TO READ.”

Wait - you are forced to read this??? Are you being held captive in Iraq? Are you in prison? Please send location and we will send Special Forces.

“...PROFFESIONAL JOURNALISM FROM NOW ON AND IF YOUR A FAT NERDY BOY WHO DOES THIS FROM HOME WELL THEN I SUGGEST YOU GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND LEARN SOMETHING OTHER THAN COMPUTERS AND STUDY COMUNICATIONS AND REAL JOURNALISM YOU DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB ####! #### YOU..”

And you graduated with a degree in communications from where? Just asking, ‘cause you have a masterful command of the english language, and I would like to promote the school if possible.

“ATTACK NINTENDO CUZ THEY SAID THEY WERE AIMING TO SELL LIKE 30 MILLION OF THEIR WII’S. OH IS THAT NOT ARROGANCY OR CONFIDANCE? ATTACK THEM YOU ####### DUMB PARTIAL BIASED ####!!!”

Dropping the “Arrogancy” bomb again?

Fanboyz….sheesh.

Well, at least he spelled my name right.

If you’ve read through the comments here, you’d see that I’m not a fanboy at all. I like the PS3’s chances. So that essentially addresses everything you said, because I’m not a fanboy and if I see something that Microsoft or Nintendo says that I find moronic, I’m going to call them out. (see the Shadowrun pricing story, located here http://games.gearlive.com/playfeed/article/q107-shane-kim-responds-shadowrun-pricing-structure/)

As for the Nintendo thing, they outlined a number of units they aim to sell. Sony can do that, too; I don’t mind. But when they make these overwhelmingly sweeping generalizations about what the public wants, I take issue with that. They should be focusing on promoting the system and its games—not proclaiming how all real gamers want their system.

Chris owns all..

Mick, did you just waste an hour analyzing Jays comment?  Get a life bro.

Mick. stop your B-S.
man aren’t u a fan f**king fan boy.

ohhh xbox uhhhhh i like me xbox,

shut up lock at the facts.
you said:Because the 360 was supply constrained until April of ‘06. You couldn’t buy one if you wanted to.

!my assssssss! 360 was just getting the red ring of death, now u know what im talking about right?
360 was brakeing down.like my did and i got a new one in 5 weeks that sucksss.
i like the 360,but i dont like people talking s*it like u do mick.
just whait,ps3 will get up nicely.

The dude did get a little exited yes but its not like what he said was wrong. It is a fad to now go against everything the executives at sony say. Suposedly eveything they say is arrogancy, but they over look other companies. Besides if what ayou where going to attack was him instead of his comments then you shouldnt have written nothing at all.

Ah how i miss the good ol’ days when we had professional journalism and serious reporting and reporters werent so biased. Too Bad times change and not always for the better. Its inn to hate on Sony now.

well maybe real gamers want a ps3 but they cant afford it right now…just like the psp wen selling a lot after the price drop
