Leaked video shows new Xbox 360 fall 2011 dashboard update
What's not new: The Xbox 360 is likely getting a Fall update that contains significant graphical updates and a few new features, like enchanted Kinect motion and voice navigation, Bing integration, and, ultimately, live television streaming.
What is new: A freshly leaked video that shows just how some of the different components of the new Xbox interface are shaping up.
An unknown source has leaked a full video that shows off a lot of the simple menu navigation and new user interface elements allegedly arriving on November 15 as a part of Microsft's fall Xbox 360 dashboard update. What's missing, however, are all the juicy bits: A preview of the voice-activated search, for example, or any kind of mention of an integrated live TV service or promised social connectivity, like the ability to fire off news of one's achievements to a connected Facebook account.
Still, the video – crappy soundtrack included – is at least a glimpse of what the final dashboard might invariably look like as we inch closer to its alleged release date. And this is the first time we've really seen motion attached to what's otherwise been just a listing of screenshots from Microsoft proper.
As for the chatter about the alleged release date for the service, Kotaku's Owen Good recently reported that a leaked internal email from PayPal allegedly indicates that the new Xbox update would be arriving on November 15. Microsoft began testing the new dashboard update in October, and PayPal employees were allegedly asked to join up for the trial run – PayPal was added as a payment option on Xbox Live just this past May, allowing users to pay for the service, Microsoft Points, and on-demand games without actually needing a physical credit card.
If Microsoft's dashboard update looks familiar, it's because the design fits in the same family as the user interface for both the company's Windows Phone 7 OS and Windows 8 developer preview. In other words, Xbox Live will fit rather seamlessly into Microsoft's upcoming system OS, a future integration promised by none other than Xbox Live's own Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb.
